In the passenger vessels of the P. & O. Company the stewards com- menced work at 5, o'dock in the morning and with a full complemented of passengers did not finish work until 9 or 10 pm-17 hours work per day-if they obtained an hour's rest in the afternoon they were lacky. For the greater part of the voyage the vessel was in the tropics, and the misery of a steward's life during a hot passage down the Red Sea beggars description.
