THE STORY OF THE GREY PEBBLE.
~There was once a small grey pebble on the sea-shore. It had been washed up by a rough sea and had been lying there unnoticed by anyone för some time.
One day a fisherman and his little boy came along. The boy who was called lowerth (because this was in Wales and the names are very different to English ones) had a small basket and was collecting some of
the stones."
"Look Father!" he said, "Here is a grey pebble with a pretty red streak in it." And he picked it up and put it in his basket amongst the other stones.
"It is a very pretty stone, Towerth," answered his father, "Now come along and we will go and see how the new castle is getting on."
"What castle Father?" asked the {boy.
#
There is one being built on the hill-side near by.” replied his father. It is for the Prince of Deganwy and hundreds of men are bringing stones for the walls."
"Why Father I" cried lowerth "I will take some stones for the castle. I have a basket nearly full." "They are too small I am afraid," laughed bis father, "The castle walls are being made of great blocks.”
tall one day the grey pebble saw some After that all was quiet for a time,
people going down the hill in a great burry. Amongst them were the Lady | Myfanwy and her little son, Taliessin. The pebble heard some of the cour tiers saying that a terrible plague bad broken out in the village of Deganwy and the Prince was sending his wife and son away to Carnarvon where they would be safe.
After what seemed z`very long time they returned safely to the castle; much to the grey pebble's delight because he loved to watch little Taliessin with his nurse playing ball outside the castle walls.
Of course the grey pebble could not tell how the weeks and months passed but he knew that he must have been there some time for the ivy was beginning to creep up the stones and Taliessin was growing up to be a man.
One day there was a tremendous bustle around. All the gates were closed and barred and then a body of armed men came rushing up the hill- side and attacked the castle. At first the Prince and his people drove them back, but more and more came on until the castle was surrounded.
KILLING BULLOCKS.
A WOMAN'B METHOD.
www.
PISTOL TO SAVE THEM PAIN.
Scene: Outside a London butcher's shop, into the yard of which some bollocks have just been taken."
A young woman of refined appearance and gentle voice enters hesitatingly and asks the butcher:
Do you use a humane killer?”
The butcher answers, "No." and the woman pleads: "May I show yan how to?”.
Unable to resist his visitor, in a few micutes she is in the slaughter- house confronted with a bullock ready for felling. She puts the pistol to its head, fires, and the animal drops dead.
Then, with a smile, she says: "Now you try," and shows the man the vital spot for placing the barrel. And the butcher kills his bellock as quickly and easily. In the result the pole-axe is hung up and the pistol takes its place.
HER FIRST KILL.
The woman is Misa Violet Wood, secretary of the Council of Justice to Animals. It is her mission to pro- mote humane methods in slaughter- ing animals for food.
The first time I killed an animal
was last July," she told a reporter. "I was anxious to learn in order that I might teach butchers, and I went into a butcher's shop in Clapham Park-road. S.W., and asked whether I might use his bumane killer under his instruction."
