Madam Zambra was fined £9/15/~| with £1 costs, in the Adelaide Poller Court on January 23, for having attempted to impose upon a polier woman by means of palmistry and clairvoyance.

In giving his reserved judgment, Mr. Hewittson, SM, made an in- teresting announcement on the law relating to metaphysics. He said that, so far as he knew, there was no phenomenon or manifestation of human power accepted scientifically under the description of clairvoy ance, but the results created by the defendant "extended to far beyond, and invoked both the Bring and the dead. Until recently half the deaths in the world were caused by malaria following on the bite of a musquito. The whole history of the world has been affected by it. In some of the richest parts of the United States more than 50 per cent of the popula- tion are infected with the disease. The sickness causes the State of Texas an annual loss of over five millions of dollars. In Africa it is the rock against which civilisation das beaten in vain.

The word mosquito, said lecturer, was given to a small group of insects named Anopheles, one of the gnat family. It alone transmitted malaria. The female was responsi ble, for blood was necessary in the life of her eggs. Mosquitoes must not be confused with gnats The Brindle guat caused yellow fever. But it was a domesticated creature, breeding in water butts or tins, never liking an earth bottom. No guat transmitted disease in this country.

The late Colonel Gorgas drove out yellow fever from Havana. And when he turned his attention to the Panama the success of the canal was assured. The work of the Americans under Colonel Gorgas WEL the finest example of controlled Lt. Com . & Mrs sanitation in the world. And by it Mr D. D. Dryden the entomologist came into his own.
