LONDON February 1.

The generally optimistic attitude of the British press with reference to the agreement reached by the Allies with regard to reparations is not shared by the Westminister Gazette whose Paris correspondent says that | Mr. Lloyd George was stung to plain speaking by the sentimental French view. The correspondent asserts as a result of his private conversations with British official personages that they know the sum obtainable to be relatively low. The correspondent expresses the opinion that the system now proposed is largely camondage and in a few years when Germany will probably be behind in payments and the Allies alarmed at the inflow of German goods a very different compromise will be proposed. He says as regards the export tax" that it will prove impossible to contral German exports through neutrals or to America.

FINANCIAL EFFECTS.

LONDON, February 1. City financiers point out that foreign exchanges and stock markets have not reacted as favourably as was expected upon the Allied agreement as regards German reparations, There is a certain amount of scepticism whether the terms are to be enforced and fears that Germany will pour oct milliards of fresh notes in order further to depreciate the mark. A. Hares message states: M. Briand as President of the Conference sent the head of the German delegation a letter stating the conference decisions regarding disarming. CIVIL COURT REJECTS CORK MAN'S APPLICATION.

LONDON, February 1.

In connection with the appeal of 2 Cork man named Murphy in the King's Bench Division, Dublin, the Chief Justice delivered a unanimous judgment declaring that the Court had had no power to give a further stay of execu tion, but expressing the opinion that the prisoner should be given opportu- nity for making any further application in accordance with the Army Act.

[A London cable dated January 17 stated:-The High Court is hearing an appeal by a Cork man named Murphy against a court martial death sentence for participation in an ambush. Leave to appeal was granted by the Chief Justice after a strong agitation on behalf of Murphy whose innocence is asserted. The execution was postponed for the third time until February 2.1

CHALLENGE CUP GAMES-

The first round of the competition for the Hoogkong Rugby Challenge Cup has been completed with the Navy heading the list with two wins our of two matches played. The Club are in second position with one win, while the Army had had very bad luck in losing both games, The second round of the be competition is scheduled. to played on Wednesday, but there is talk of the Army experiencing great difficulty in raising a team owing to the camp training, and the Navy have very sportingly agreed to postpone the match for a week. The next game on the programme-Club v. Army is down for decision on the Club ground on Saturday, kick-off at 4.30 pm. The Army will be able to raise a team by then, and what is more, they expect to be at their full strength. The Club too, hope to field. a strong XV, so that a very keen and exciting struggle is anticipated.
