GIFT OF. UNTOLD WORTH,

EXPLORING WITH A BICYCLE,

THE CHINA MAIL:

The Rev. John Roscoe's personal triumph in East Africa, to which country he went on behalf of the Royal Society and the Government with an expedition financed by Sr. Peter Mckie, and spent a year, among native tribes, learning much of tribal customs, and superstitions, has been rather lost to the intense interest in the scientific results. With charming modesty he said, in answer to a question on the personal dangers of the journey: "Ob Fres

they killed several before I arrived and several after I left; but they were kindness itself to me.” | His chief dancer, be says, came from the wild excitement Into which the people worked themselves ar certain ceremonies, marching and singing in gangs. and knocking people down „promiscuously with clubs. He would have been himself clabbed by one gang while photo graphing another but for timely defence by two native servants.

and ask whether the English have them. His answer is excellent, ax philosophy and for its tact: "I-dare say we did once.”. -

And their generosity to the visitor! Did ever king in history, even Solo- mon, give a thing of more real valt. to the recipient, than the old, ka mensely old, throne of the King- Priests of Banyero, a great, skin- covered stool of wood on eight feet each foot worth a king's ransom by reason of its scientide interests.

This white-haired clergyman, who walked and cycled thousands of miles along great heights and river valleys and into forest depths; who was sent alone to take part in ceremonies never before shown to a European, who was weeks without seeing a white man, who was tolling and taking risks every hour-be was never out of harness for a single day, in spite of malaria; nor abated a jot of his human and scientific interests. LIFE-SAVING KNOWLEDGE' WÒN, The knowledge he has gained will save thousands of lives-bables from poisonous dosings and grown people from foul diseases and cattle from prevailing plagues.

Sir Peter McKie, who with whole- bearted generosity said;."I will see it through, whatever it costs," and Oxford, who put up money for their museums, and the Royal Society, who gave name and interest, chose and found a partner indeed, a man who proved in the most literal sense

THE 'EUGMAN" MISSING. There was something delightfully simple and English about the trip Mr. Roscoe, clergyman in his 60th year, traits one Juce day from his tiny and most remote Norfolk rectory to Cardiff, taking his camera and hisz host in himself, doctor, photogra- bicycle." He waits some weeke for a pher, surveyor, missionary. ship, then sails to Mombasa, where The finds that the "bugman,” or fëntomologist, and photographer had failed him. So "the McKie expedi- tion” becomes just a travelling par- son who goes off into the blue, where, however, every kind and sort of facility is given, for East Africa knows him.

CYCLING ON NATIVE PATHS.,

Yet his bicycle is his best facility. He cycles off along native parhs, gets a start of ten miles or so of bis native troop, and starts talking tɔ inquisitive natives whom his presence astonishes. His natives when they come up find him the centre of a crowd with whom he is conversing easily in one of the three native languages that he commands. The while priceless secrets have fallen into his possession.

He is trusted everywhere--by can- nibals and milk-drinkers and by those whose daily joint of mole's flesh is garnished with bamboo tops. He is so intimately acquainted with the customs and ways of thought of each tribe that they say to himdid actually in so many words say to hira: Oh, you are one of us" and the rest is plain sailing.

"Their belief is that such customs ag theirs must flourish in England 100,

BOMBSHELL FOR BOOKMAKERS.

BETS PAID BY GENQUM.

SENTATIONAL RULING IN THE

HIGH COURT.

A decision on obeque-paid furi debts of vital importance to the sporting world was given by Mr. Justice Rowlett in the King's Bench Division in mail week.

Mr. Sydney Robert Briggs, off Duckett-road, Harringay, N. sought to recover from Mr. James Sutters, of the Victoria Club, Wellington- street, the sum of £50, the amount of a cheque paid in respect of a bet on the result of the Cesarewitch.

The jodge held that Mr. Briggy was entitled to recover the money.

The decision has caused a great sensation among bookmakers. It was the sole topic of conversation at the Victoria Club, the members of which include all the important com mission agents, when a press re presentative called there.

*The decision is prepost extras,” said Mr James Satters, who was the defendant in the action. "It will not be allowed to rest here; we shall fight the matter as far as the House of Lords if necessary.

"This finding opens possibilities of!! money for nothing to any so-called sportsman, who cares to follow it to a logical conclusion. He can pocket his cash winnings as long as he is in lock, and when he loses be can pay by cheque and promptly recover his losses by bringing an action. There would be no need for a man to become a forger or a thief. Here are the Law Courts offering a "get- -rich-quick' scheme to all and sundry

under legal protection_”””

Other leading bookmakers sup- ported the views expressed by Mr. Sutters.

"Mind you," said a prominent Jawyer, "this case was selected as a test; there are any number of claims awaiting, the decision. You may take it that more than £100,000 areį at stake I myself am faced with cre claim alone of £19,000.”

The possibilities opened up are endless, according to the views of interested persons Executors and guardians

doubtless feel

it

their duty to endeavour to recover gambling losses incurred by their charges, while, as a member öf the club pointed out, in the case of

No stiff joints or aching back

when you were young.

Yet now you are at middle age, or perhaps a little older, your back aches "fit to break". There are sharp twinges of rheumatism in your muscles and joints, And you do not feel as well as thirty years ago..when you could romp with the youngsters and feel that life was really worth living. Why this great change?

Aga is not wholly to account for it, for we read in (a newspapers every day, how people live to a hundred years of age in strong, vigorous health. And so can you, if you de as many thousands of others are careful 'to do, that is to keep your body in good health, eas with moderation, work reasonably, and take a reasonable amount of sleep.

Tot even with can some people sufer, from, aches and pains of some kind, at one time or spoilies. And those sches and pains öhen mean kidney trouble. Sach symptoms as constipation, deckache, pains in muscles and joints, scanty urine, scd such miserabie amictions as rheumanísm. lumbaga, szlatim, burning infomation of - the badder, Karel and gout, are all symptoms of kidney izomble. I the kidneys are strong and healthy, these affictions will net—cannot come to you, but if the kidneys are week they are trable to do their proper work, and so the joints get stik, and the back aches.

Get rid of these symptoms. by getting the kidneys back to health and strength, and you will be able to mjoy lifa to-day sa you did thirty years ago. De Wit's Kidney und Bladder Pills will help you to do this for certainty.

Thounds of people, many of thein over sevenly and eighty years of age) have lestified to the marvellous benefit received from Da Will's Pilla, which are made expressly for the kidneys and the bladder. Why is it that De Wir's Hillikere cured so many thousands of so-called. "hopeless” cases even when wruything she has failed. “There is a secret and it is this. De Witt's Fills are scientifically compounded expressly to act on the kidneys and the bladder, what is more they get there.

When you take orditary medicine, or so-called “buckache” pilla you often get i poor results, for they never go near the kidneys.

How when you take De Witt's Pills, you will notics, within a few hours, that the utino has turned a muddy bluish oston. You know by that podzive, procť that "these wonderful little pills have passed through the Hidneys and the,

bladder. "You have the proof before your eyes.

From that moment the cleansing of the kidneys and bladder ommences and whan the kidners are thoroughly cleansed and healed of all imparities, the pains in your back and joina will disappear just as surely as the sun will miss tos - Morrow morning,

When you see the wine change to a muddy, Hinish colour, a festare which distinguishes De Win's Pills from all others, you know beyond all doubt that they havs pas their healing truer on the right spot the kidneys and the bladder.
