In a manifesto, De Valera, as forecasted in the Freeman's Journal || denies that Sina Fein is making overtures for peace but states that he will not turn a deaf ear to Goremment proposals provided they are based on a recognition of Ireland as an independent nationality.

The manifesto continues: "When representatives of the English nation are prepared to meet representatives of the Irish nation on an equal national footing peace talk will be possible."

It is stated that the forces of the Crown are very assiduously searching for De Valera whom they are most anxious to arrest.

RATE COLLECTORS INTIMIDATED.

Armed Sit Feixers simultaneously visited the residences of the Dublin County Council rate collectors who resigned owing to the Council 2dhering to Dail Ereann and forced the collectors to sign cheques aggrega ting at least £10,000 representing monies withheld. The collectors were held prisoners until the cheques were cashed.

EXHAUSTIVE INVESTIGATION OF REVOLUTIONARY MOVEMENT.

INFLUENCE STEADILY WANING.

LONDON, January 6.

It is a mistake to suppose that Bolshevism has infected Britain. This is the conclusion reached by Dr. Arthur Shadwell, the author and journalist, who has just concluded an exhaustive investigation of the revolutionary movement in Great Britain on behalf of the Times. Dr. Shadwell, who toured the industrial areas searching for the causes and tendencies of the prevailing unrest, says that the farment of revolution is undoubtedly work ing in the hearts of a number of people, of which exemplars exist every where who would "get up a revolution in heaven," but in Britain these comparatively few are powerless owing to the absence of material on which to work. He says that Bolshevism is essentially international, depending on external propaganda for existence. Consequently there is a tendency to discern the hand of Moscow in any British revolutionary, manifestation, but this is the mistake Bolshevism made. The idea of revolution is familiar but its influecce is steadily waning. Indeed opinion is hardering against Moscow's dictatorial tenets which are abhorrent to the British temperament.

The War Office reports considerable activity in the Maglobar and Siahrud area 20 miles south of Resht when the Reds made an artillery atwatow, Amoy, and Tako tack on a British post on December 26 and 28.
