The London correspondent of the Manchester Guardian states that several big firms-including a very juportart Manchester concern-have subscribed a large part of the sum required to start the new business organisation to develop industries in China. The committee appointed at the recent meeting is working out a definite scheme, which will be sub- mirted to a second meeting shortly. At the first meeting there seanis to hare been some misconcep Now about what is proposed. It was thought that it was question of fidating a syndicate fo work a new Chinese Concession. The object is rather to create a sort of commercial general staff, which have the task of organising new in- dustries in China, to be worked joint- ly on co-operative lines by British and Chinese capital, but under British control. The Chinese au- thorities have granted a charter which, for the first time, allows British commercial enterprise to work outside the limits of the Treaty Ports, and the case for the scheme is that if the opportunity is not grasped by British business it will | quickly fall into the hands of formign

competitors.
