BEITSH PRINCE FOR IRISH THRONE?

The adminster Gazette

issue, publishes a very recent remarkable story of a recent meeting of the Irish Vigilance Society. What gires it interest and importance is the account received of the dealings

of the American branch of thatsociety Jan. with "Citizen Edward de Valera." The American branch has detected symptoms

of the weakness of am- bition and vanity" in De Valera, and has pointed out to him that the idea Feb. of an Irish Republic, with himself as President, is repugnant to the mon- archical sentiments of Irishmen.

After interrogation, Citizen de "have no Valera is declared to objection, and never had, to Ireland being a real kingdom, and, not the offshoot of a kingdom, instead of a Republic, but the King should be de facto an Irish Sovereign, meaning that he should be King of Ireland only and responsible only to the Irish people."

MR. SIMPSON'S LECTURE.

HISTORY AND POLITICS.

"The Near East" was the subject of an interesting lourire yesterday afternoon at Helena May Institute by Mr. R. K. M. Simpson of the Hong- kong University.

At the outset Mr. Simpson advanced the hypothesis that the Near East is the hub of the universe, from the geographical standpoint, and proceed- ed to test this theory in the light 5f history. The traditions of Eden, Arrarst and Babel, the early history of Assyrians and Phoenicians, the Pharaohs and King Solomon, Hebrew religion and Greek art are all proof of this hypothesis, but it is to modern history that we must go for the cop- clusive revelation of the importance of the Near East. He traced out the chief routes which join East to West through the Near East, and showed how the Ottoman Empire had for four centuries deprived both East and West to the of the use of those routes. course of modern history, the Near East has asserted its importance in three diferent stages.
