AWARD TO FORMER SHOEMAKER'S APPRENTICE,

STOCKHOLM, November 13. The 1919 Nobel Prize for literature has been awarded to a Swiss, Spittaler. The newspapers are much astonished and consider that it was expected the Prize would be given to Thomas Hardy. The 1930 Frize was awarded to the Norwegian, Kanthamsun, formerly a shoemaker's apprèn- pice.
