BUFFALOES IN CANADA.
INTERESTING DISCOVERY.
THE LASS SURVIVORS OF MILLIONS.
A herd of wild buffaloes, believed to be the last on the North American continent, numbering over 1,000 animals, is reported to have been re- cently discovered in the Mackenzie River basin by the exploring engi- neers of the Government "Depart-
ment of the Interion. This herd is believed to be the last survivors of the countless millions of buffaloes which were ruthlessly exterminated by hunters during the past half. century. There had been traditions among the Indians for a long time that such a herd existed, but this is the first authentic record. It is re parted by the Government exploring party that another Buffalo herd equally large exists still further north, where it probably settled after the great trek of the buffaloes many years ago to avoid the systematic slaughter of both white and Indian
