TRAFALGAR DAY.

I wonder how many of you remem- (bered that last Thursday, the 21st of

October, was Trafalgar Day?

1. On this day, 115 years ago, a great

kavel battle was fought.

And also do you know how much the winning of this banke meant to England?

Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor, of France, wished to invade England, that is to conquer it. But, as you know, it is an island, and the sea is all round it, so that first of all he had to fight the navy. If he had won, itļ would have been easy enough to cap- tere England.

Op

So, he ordered the French fleet, which was commended by 2 camed Villeneuve, to put to sea. October 21, at daybreak, Villeneuve's feet met the English one, at the head of which was Nelson, off Cape Trafalgar in Spain.

Nelson only had 27 ships and VI. leneuve had 33 French and Spanish ones and it did not look as if it were? possible for the English, to win.

You know how ships signal to one another by means of Bags?

Nelson had a signal flown on his ship, The Victory," which meant ***England expects every man to do his duty." Now the duty of all the English was to fight as hard as they! could, so that their country should not be in danger of being taken by the

enemy.

They fought all day and then Nelson was shot in his left shoulder. Ber still the English fought on and Nelson lived just long enough to know that they had won.

He was buried in St. Paris Gathe- dral and his ship The Victory" is Dow at Portsmouth and anyone can go and see her.

There is a lamous painting too in which you see Nelson in the midst of! his men. He had been speaking to

Captain Hardy when he was shot and he fell back attering" the words. "They've got me. Hardy!" It was. not the first time that he had been wounded as in other battles he had lost an arm and an eye.

He was a brave man and we ought all to be grateful to him for having saved or country.

When you go to London you will see a stare of him on a tali column, guarded by stone tions, in Trafalgar Square, and every year, on October -21 laurel wreaths are placed at the

foot of it.
