GOVERNMENT CANNOT TOLERATE INDEPENDENCË.

STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE.

LONDON, October 13. Sir Hamar Greenwood, în a speech at Belfast this afternoon, said that Lord French, General McReady and himself were in complete accord and none of them was resigning. They believed that the imperial and strategic unity of Ireland was fundamental for the peace of {the United Kingdom and the well being of the Empire, and would not budge

SOVIET REGIME.

SENSATIONAL RUMOURS OF COLLAPSE DISCOUNTED.

TROUBLE IN SIPERIA,

LONDON, October 13.

The sensational rumours which have been current in the past few days regarding anti-Bolshevik outbreaks throughout Russia have not receiv- ed any confirmation from official sources. It is wise, therefore, to take them somewhat sceptically at present in view of previous stories of the impending collapse of the Bolshevik regime. Nevertheless, it seemsa beyond doubt that the Soviet is encountering trouble in Siberia, for, according to a Helsingfors message, the Bolshevik paper Proods admits that over a thousand persons were arrested in various towns in Siberia for complicity in a plot to blow up the bridges on the railways, kill Communist leaders; and organise peasant revolts. The leaders of the conspiracy are declared to be ex-officers of Koitchak's and Semenoff's armies.

SELLING A WIFF.

LAW-IN JAPAN.

REJECTED HUSBAND'S "VIOLENCE.

Cases were reported occasionally in England down to a generation or 50 ago of men selling their wives. It occurred only among the mosi „de- graded classes, and when the wife consented to give herself to the pur chase it was probably with the idea -that" a man who had proved his bona Tides to the extent of hall-z-crown or so was at any rate better than a worth- less husband. The legal effect of the sake was confined to its preventing the husband having any recourse to law it he subsequently took it úpons himself to become jealous, but it did - nothing in the way of dissolving the legal bond. If the Japanese papers are to be trusted, the law is differ- ent in Japan, remarks the Japan Chronicle. Kokusai forwards - the translation, of a story of a man who, because he was hard up, sold his wife To a brothel for Y200. An artist who frequented the place some time after paid off the brothel-keeper and took the woman out, living with her as his, wife. Then the husband came back, and "wanted, the, vile again....... He up- peated to the police about it, but the police told him that he had m-claim. So apparently the sale of a wife is a legal and binding transactionin Japan. The rejected husband mani- fested his affection is the usual nians ner of his kind with a kitchen knife. or some such weapon. Both his vic tims were very seriously injured,
