SUNDAY SCHOOL CONVENTION.
HALL BURNED DOWN.
DRAMATIC SCENE IN TOKYO.
--
Tokyo, October 5.-The Conven tion Hall, specially built for the World Sunday School Convention, ia which a fire broke out this after- noon has become a total loss. The cause of the outbreak is not-de- Enitely known, but it is believed to have been due to a short-circuit in thei electric wiring, seeing that it started when the lights were turned on in, an illuminated dome, in the centre of the building which bore the in- scription: "I am the light of the world."
The building though of handsome design, was of light lath and plaster construction, and burned like tinder, It cost about 150,000 yen
There were 800 people in the hall, including 600 choristers, when, the fire started, in the domed ceiling, too high to be accessible. The gathering dispersed in good order, but there tremendous amount of

excitement.
It has been ascertained that no one was killed, though at first it was thought that some had been caught in the galleries before they were able to escape. A few people, however, sustained minor injuries.
The scene from outside was most dramatic. A tremendous pillar of black smoke hung over the centre of Tokyo, and huge flames were seen shooting above the buildings on the sky-line.
Then the smoke and flames disap peared with startling suddenness.
The great square in front of the Central-Station, which is near the Bal, was packed with spectators, who were driven back by police and mounted gendarmes.
A figure of Christ a few yards from the half was unharmed, --
Had the fire broken out a few hours later an awful holocaust would have resulted. The building was insured for 140,000 yin.: The records and exhibits of the Conven-- tion have bean entirely lost. Count Uchida has expressed his condolences
