CHINISE IN FRANCE,

REPUBLIC ANNIVERSARY FESTIVAL.

PARIS, October 11.

A Havas ressage states: The advent of a democratic regime in China was commemorated by a festival arranged by the Chinese workmen in their camp at Clichy near Paris. Obligation to France was expressed in various speeches for the kind and considerate treatment of Chinese workers.

FRENCH FINANCIAL POSITION SAFE.

LONDON, October 11.

The French Minister of Finance, interviewed by the Daily Mail, said that all danger resulting from the French financial position was over.

THE COAL STRIKE

BALLOT RESULT UNCERTAIN.

SOUTH WALES AGAINST ACCEPTANCE.

LONDON, October 11.

14

A coal strike throughout the country of nearly a million miners will be decided to-day and to-morrow by the ballot on the question of the rejec- tion or acceptance of the owners datum line offer, but anything like accurate calculations of the result are impossible before Oct. 13, when the executive of the Miners Federation meets in London to receive the figures, as there are no means of measuring the extent of the check given to the earlier wave of opposition by the recommendations of Mr. Smilie and the other leaders to accept the owners terms. Significant of the inficence of Mr. Smillie is the narrow majority, namely 55 to 45 by which the Northumber land Miners' Council rejected, the datum lize scheme and the fact that coupled with the rejection, was support for the proposal to refer the wages demand to an impartial tribunal. The ballot papers in some of the South Wales districts have already been returned and as expected show a heavy majority against acceptarce
