STRIKES IN INDIA.

CALCETTA, October 3rd.

A serious tea garden, affray is reported from the Lakhimpur district in Assam. Coolies of eight gardens went on strike for higher wages to meet the increased cost of living, looted a market, assaulted the garden managers and the European Police Supertarendent and damaged houses.

A few platoons of the Assam Rifes were brought up and quiet was restored.

Eighteen hundred drivers and conductors of the Calcutta Tramways Company "downed tools" demanding a 50 per cent. Increase in wäges. A European engineer who was attempting to run a car was seriously assaulted.

FRANCE AND GERMANY.

PARIS, October 3rd. Dr. Mayer, the German Ambassador, paid his first official visit to M. Leygues and emphasised that it was the intention of Germany to carry out the Treaty of Ver sailles to the extreme limit of her possi- bilities.

POLAND'S WARS.

WARSAW, October 3rd. The conclusion of the Polish-Lithuanian ärmistice has just been announced.

The latest communique recounts smash. ing successes of the Poles dering the past few days against the Bolshevis, and states- that the pursuing detachments have cross ed the river Servez and occupied Novo. The enemy who was last week grodsk

before Belostok, Brest-Litorsk, Lemberg and other important towns and was pre- paring for a resumption of the offensive has now been driven back between a hundrel and a hundred and fifty kilo metres, having suffered enormous fosses in killed and wounded and lost a large amount of material.

Twentysix Soviet divisions have been completely or partly destroyed, and the remnants are retreating. Numerous army records have been captured.

During the last engagement, 42,000 prisoners were taken and 160 guns, 950 machine guns, 18 armoured cars, armour. ed trains, and 2,500 trucks, also, sero. planes, locomotives, motor-cars, waggons, and munitions were captured.
