She
as one of the leading members of the German Intelligence Service. was 43 years old and had been married three times. By one of her marriages she became the Baroness von Kretschmann. Shortly afterwards. according to her own story, she be came attached to the German Foreign Office. In 1917 she married in Ger- many Senor Jose Emanuel de Victorica, a citizen of Argentina, and as such obtained a passport to the United States. It was said that this marriage was solely ore of con- venience for the purpose of getting the passport and other credentials.
Investigation of Mme. Victorica's activities proved that she was closely associated with Herman Wessels, later indentified as Carl Rodiger, the reputed head of the German spy system in the United States after the departure of Count von Bernstorff. She was arrested and charged with conspiracy to foment revolution in Ireland and also with placing bombs in British ships. Jeremiah O'Leary, the notorious Irish agitator, was a co-defendant in the same indictment, and Mme. Victorica was used as the Goremment's chief witness against him. While the case against her. was pending Mme. Victorica' was removed to the Army base hospitali on Ellis Island, suffering from pneumonia, which became acute within a few hours after it was diagnosed.
A curious feature of the case was that this developed shortly after Mme. Despina Davidovitch Storch the beau tiful Turkish woman, who was under artest as a German spy, died of the same disease. Both women at that time were confronted with the pos- sibility of facing a-firing squad, and the belief was held that pneumonia germs were either self-administered or given by some scientific murderer attached to the German secret service. Specialists from John Hopkins Hos pital, Baltimore, however, succeeded in saving her life, and conspiracy charges against her were not pressed in order to allow her to undergo treatment for the morphine babit, to which she admitted she had been addicted for 20 years. She entered a convent to receive treatment, and nothing further was heard of her until her removal to a sanatorium a few days ago suffering from a second attack of pneumonia, from which she died.
BUTCHER CLAIMS
£8,000,000.
Mr. Syman Horosvitz, who keeps a small butcher's shop, in St. Urbain- street, Montreal, is believed to be heir to an estate of £8,000,000, left by a second cousin, who changed his religion and became a Catholic bishop in California, and died in- testate at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York.
The estate is being administered by the American Government, which has searched for years for heirs. The estate meantime has accumulat- ed, so it is difficult to estimate "its exact value to-day; it may be £10,000,000 now.
