That proof seems to have been supplied by recent experiences re ported in The Journal of Commerce. The firm of Leopold. Walford Ltd., is not the least considerable of English shipowners. They have been running a concrete steamer in conjunction with steel steamers in their Continental trade, and they say "The concrete steamer "Armistice" carried some 909 tons of oats, or about 100 tons more than a steel ship of equal deadweight capacity." If freight was worth 403 a ton they obviously made £400 more on that voyage by owning a concrete ship,
That, however, is only a beginning. They go on to report:-"The daily upkeep cost per ton deadweight bas heen only one-fifth of the average cost for steel vessels working under similar conditions." If we assume the upkeep cost of concrete vessels works out at 15s a day they save over £1,000 per annum by owning a
