Among the varied assortment of; creatures which recently arrived atį the "Zoo" from India is a solitary! specimen of the Climbing Anabas, as; it is officially labelled.

It is a fish, which would, perhaps, have, been better.described by its popular name of “Climbing Perch;"; and is at present accommodated in the Reptile House, confined in a tank with a number of catfish.

Around the aquarium the other? day a number of boys set waiting for the mysterious fish to act up to

its name, but as its only means of doing so was by scaling the glass sides of the tank they were docmed. to disappointment.

Apparently disgusted at its lack of i opportunity, it was hiding its face, in a seashell. It might well do this seeing that it has a reputation of climbing trees after its food, though it has been only once observed to do so and that was by Daldorf im 1791. A climbing perch has a special organ to assist in the oxygenisation of its blood while prospecting on land.
