ETABS MAN IN BACK WITH SCISSORS. Mr. T. Rowan appeared before Magistrate Hutchison this morning, to defend a Chinese charged at the instance of Inspector Willis, of West Point, with wounding another Chinese with a pair of scissors.
Connsel pleaded not guilty" on behalf of his client.

Inspector Willis said that about 7 p.m. yesterday, a crowd was watching a street performance, when suddenly a fight occurred between the defendant and complainant. The formes, it was alleged, accused the latter of jostling him. A constable stopped the fight and sent the away. Half an hour later they again met, and the quarrel was renewed. In the course of the altercation the defendant was alleged to have whipped out the pair of scissors (produced) and stabbed the complainant in the small of the back. The complainant was removed to to the hospital where his wound was dressed. He was discharged this morning.
After evidence bad been heard, Mr. Rowan asked leave to call the defendant's employer and a foki to prove that his client was a peaceful man and had never been. known to fight. In fact, said Counsel, the defendant was known in the shop where he worked as "a. country idiot.”
Both witnesses bore out Counsel's stament to the effect that the defendant wES a little silly," but quile barmless. One of them said
