RESCUED FROM THE DEEP. NOTICE TO SHIPPERS AND
CLD GUN COTTON SOLD.
ELUSIVE FISHERMAN CAUGHT.
The master of a fishing boat, was this morning charged before Magis trate Hutchison with the lawful possession, on his vessel, of two tins of gun cotton.
The defendant said that he "fished" the stuff up from the sea. Be did not know what it was Somicore offered to buy it from him, and he consented to sell... Then the police came on board and arrested him.
Inspector Earner said that the police had received information a long time ago that the defen- dant was selling cotton, but every time they went to search his boat,:
Yesterday it had pushed off.
Inspector Fox located the boat, and a search led to the discovery of the gun cotton, which was from old stores that had been dumped into the sea" sometime ago by the Admiralty.
The Magistrate enquired what was the result of a previous similar case.
Inspector Fox replied that in the previous case the defendant was con. victed of dynamiting fish and fined $100. Inspector Earner asked: the Magistrate to take a serious view of the case, as the defendant was trading the gun cotton.
The Magistrate: But can you prove that he was selling it?
Inspector Fox: I could, but the in- former refuses to come to Court.
The Magistrate imposed a fine of $150.
