BERL, August 19. -- Latest despatches from Kaftowiz report all quiet but the situation is very strained. Martial law has been proclaimed. The fighting on August 17 was very fierce, particularly round the barracks where the crowd used machine guns and hand grenades against the French troops. The casualties amongst the latter were one killed and eight wounded. The Germans reported 20 killed and 70 wounded, including the commander of the Lecurity police.

The War Office announces that further outbreaks have occured in Mesopotamia on a considerable scale, particularly north east and west of Baghdad, where bands of tribesmen cut the railways and telegraph from Baghdad to Kilri and to Kirkuk.
