the freedom from convention that in- habits aft borderlands of differing civilizations. To many it means wealth and power, opportunity, career, Says the Shanghai British Chamber of Commerce Journal.

The collective fascination exercised on the European mind, and since the 19th century on the British mind, by these various atractions is ucques- tionably great. The ball of, the East" is no mere phrase." There does exist a force strong enough to draw generation after generation of West- ern men and women to the Orient and it is one which is not by any means dependent upon environment for its influence. Many a man has been st tracted to the East not through any family association with it but, through some temperamental affinity with eastern thought or feeling as inter preted by western scholarship, litera rure and act. It is true that a good deal of this interpretation is not of a very reliable character-which is one

of the reasons for these chapters. Much of it is tinged, with conven- tional romanticism of a very obvious and misleading kind, a result, largely. of the axiom "give the public what

a great deal of what people read about the East is not much more like it than most novels are like real life, there yer exists a vast amount of interprera- tion against which no charge of mere tritiousness Can be brought. quite sufficient to say that the number of people who come to the East in search of what actually exists there is very large. And so also is the number. who would like to come asd cannot. partly because they do not know how, partly because, for all the fascination which the East exercises. they feel 100 uncertain about the more common- place and humdrum conditions. These, after all, form the basis of life in any environment. conditions of employ. ment. for instance, of work and play, of climate and health, of money- saving. of marriage. latherhood and otherhood, in a word of prospects in their widest sense.

PROSPECTS FOR BRITONS.

It is not proposed here to attempt anything so ambitious as an East of Suez guide book in these matters, but. to deal with prospects for young British men and women in China. Inquiries in regard to them reach, this Chamber almost by every mail. Some of the letters come from men recently demobilized who are finding it hard to get work at home; some from men in employmem which, partly as a re- suit of their military experiences, per- haps, they find roe dull and uninspir
