JAPANESE SHIPPING.

RUKOUES OF BANKRUPTCY.

Commenting upon the shipping trade in Japan, the Japan Advertiser sayy

A few shipowners are reported.to be in a state of bankruptcy although they made no public declaration as yet. This is only another sign of the aggravation of the shipping situation. It is true that some tonnage is required in connection with the Japanese expedition to Nikolaievsk and Saghallen, but the demand is limited and is only of a temporary character and is of course not sufficient to counteract the depressing influence exerted by a number of large ocean- going ships which are being released from old charter contracts without prospect of being chartered again by

others.

Compared with shipments on the voyage from Japan to America, those for the return voyage have hitherto been pretty large, but these shipments have now also declined and the tone of the market is weaker. Freight rates, however, are unchanged, $5, or $6 being quoted for general cargo from Japan to America.

Mr. Farncombe, who gave evidence" on subpoena for the defence, was cross-examined by Mr. Disternal

Mr. Farncumbe: No, I did not understand that. I should not have been sach a fool as to sell it for 520. I was given to understand that the whole thing was a sham to carry on the camoudage about this supposed sea area, and Y4.50 for the second publishing business which Mr. Beston had not gor.

Canton has about 40,000 labourers in the spinning trade. They are mostly found outside the North Gate of the city, while some livé in Hak: Ka Cheng Sum Tin Cheng and Nam Tsun in Honam. Their former wages for spinning 1 Cheung (12-1/2 feet) of cloth of about two feet in width were from 32 to 40 coppers. During the Great War, the cloth business was dull because of lack of shipping facilities and inability to get enough foreign yarns. Consequently the wages of the spinners were reduced by one-third. The spinners can see no reason now why they should not be paid their former wages since the trade is normal. They have ceased Their working for the present. employers, however, hope to induce the labourers to assume work at an early date.
