GIGANTIC SWINDLE,

BUDAPEST DUPES.

11.

The greatest swindle on record has just been discovered at Budapest. A high Hungarian official named Martin Jellinek, who was one of the.. Prime Minister's entourage, cheatd a number of people, including skilful Lan-money speculators, of 150,000,000 crowns (nominally £18,000,000) and absconded with a forged British pass- port. At the beginning of April rumours circulated in Budapest that a certain amateur speculater was in a positio to sell foreign money at about 80 crowns below the ordinary rate of exchange. Business men were incredulous at first, but an order for the equivalent of a million crowns was promptly carried out, and the news was carefully spread. Jel- linek declared that he could procure any sum of money as he was well acquainted with the Entente officers stationed in Budapest. In the middle of May his agents circulated the news that Jellinek WAS starting on a trip abroad for foreign mogey, and would return on June Ist. Bankers, aristocrats, wealthy. R women, and officials placed nearly.

500,000,000 crowns at his disposal.. . They are still Icoking out for the swindler. There is no clue regarding his whe: eabouts. The only fact- established is that he went away. with 450,000,000 crowns. One woman, who has lost her whole for- tuse, committed suicide.

SCENE AT A THEATRE.

Certain influential women of Paris have for some time been economizing on their wearing apparel. This econo- my, applied to hosiery, gave the term of "cotton stocking" movement to the economy campaign in which so

The women present at the performance, who heretofore had followed the fashions set by the actress," arose as a sign of protest against the actress's extravagance and loudly shouted their disapproval, saying that Mille. Sorel was deliber ately defying the Government orders restricting the importation of luxuries. The actress in reply as- serted that ervy and not the desire to save inspired the objections of the
