The western, ocean horizon of Ceylon can be seen from Adam's Peak as 'the ocean horizon of Ten- eriffe can be seen from its Peak Where sea and sky join, about half. an hour before the faintest dawn on the western herizon can be seen the. earth's shadows as a dim convex cuts line in the sky; the double peak of Teneriffe, one higher than the other, is recognisable as breaking the even curve of the earth shadow. When locking out from Adam's Peak the earth shadow са the sky at the ocean horizon is similarly marked by the Peak and its shoulder which break the contour of the convexity. These similar | phenomena are produced by similar conditiors; 2n even horizon seen across a vast area of lower elevation and a towering Peak which should be distinguished by its elevation above the count. on right and left of the observer. This earth shadow is not peculiar to Adam's Peak. The Peak of Teneriffe is the only other example I have seen but there must be others.

It is the same sort of shadow as lies on the road in front of you on a bright day: the same sort of shadow as is cast by a 'cocoa put tree or a flag pole. As the sun rises the shadow. gets shorter-in the ordinary way. E { seems to be moving towards you and seems to be becoming broader," but this is an illusion, its breath" is un- altered and only its length is diminished. It is however, plainer and more distinct and then you re- cognise, the boulder and temple. As the rising sun floods the land with light, the diffused light from the other side kills the shadow and that quickly. It is amazing to see the vast shadow recede to- wards one's feet and then disappear almest suddenly, but there is nothing unusual in the canditons which pro- duce this shadow. I have seen, a similar shadow at Teneriffe,· Both the earth shadow on the sky firsc described and the Peak shadow just described, the first and second of the phenomeria I. describe, are best seen on fine clear days free from mist în ́ dry weather during the N.. E.. Monsoon period.

It is just the contrary with the third shadow, though yet in the N.E.. Monsoon period there are some days when after a rainy night, wreaths of mist are driven up by the wind from the gorge past the Western side of the mountain. This curtain of mist intercepts. the terrestrial "shadow. and, 23 it were in...n. great atmospheric mifor you sėt the shadow of Adam's Peak, the mirror of the Peak which has caused wonder and speculation. The thin wreath of mist is scaresty visible. Its origin is surmised from the drifting wreaths seen blown by the wind across one's North Western outlook.
