to 14th was spent, it was noted that the water was falling, but the current in the gorges was so swift that in order to keep steering way on the ship, full speed ahead had to be maintained. At times she was going as much as 25 knots.
It is the hardest of hard luck that! it was just in getting clear of the last really difficult part of the trip that the accident took place. A sharp and dangerous bead had just been negotiated when in a moment the big ship got out of control and drove full speed head on to the rocks on the right bank Everything forward of the bridge was crampled up like above paper, below as well as
Fortunately the the waterline. strong bulkheads and water tight compartments aft of that held and she did not settle deeply by the head, Captain Hall got his ship down to the Customs Station at Pingshan Pa and after stopping there for sme time to investigate the extent of the damage, manoeuvred her stern first the rest of the distance to Ichang, bringing her, with great skill and judgment, alongside the bank in slack water on the other side of the river where she lies til her cargo has been discharged. Unfortunately two cf the crew, one of them the bo suo, were caught by the smashed iron- work. The latter who had a leg broken and an arm fractured, was caught so badly in the shivered plares that some of them had to be sawn away before he could be releas ed." On arrival they were taken without delay to the Rankine Memp rial Hospital-C. C. Post.
LAST "LOST" SOLDIER.
MIDDLE-AGED MAN RIMAINS UNIDENTIFIED.
For several months the last uniden- tified soldier of the British Arroy has keen in the charge of War Office authorities and his came is still un: known. The private intelligence department, which has been entrusted with the establishing of the identities of soldiers who have lost. their memories, has handled a very large number of cases, and this is their only failure.
Notwithstanding the best medical treatment, the man, who is of middle age, has so far been unable even to recall the regiment in which he served. He has periods of "brighter" mental health, but remains belpless to furnish the least useful clue.....
Asked why a description and photograph of this soldier have not been circulated through the Press, a War Office official told 2 Daily Chronicle representative that pre- vioas experiments of the kind had pot proved helpful. Publication of photos, be sad had brought many replies from despairing re- latives who merely imagined likeness to their own missing. Per- sons interested in soldiers accounted for have been encouraged to send photos of their own missing relatives to the Casualty Depart ment, and descriptions of men with lost memories of whom the. War Office had charge were always Mean obtainable on application. while the last of the "lost" soldiers remains under treatment, and the War Office are considering what future action shall be taken,
