LEYLAND HODGSON CO.
PERSIANA."
At the Theatre Royal to-mOTTCW night" Persiana" is being presented by the Leyland Hodgson Company, a revue which has proved very popular wherever it has beer played. The scene is laid in an island in the Pacific, and the story in brief is that a rib-hosed baboon makes itself troublesome to the inhabitants of the Island and the Maharajah in a fashion, characteristic Maharajah offers as a reward the hand of his dainty daughter to the man who slays this baboon. The proclamation is mailed to a tree. Three English sailors ahipwrecked on the Island read the proclamation, see the girl, and 'slay a baboon. It doesn't happen to be rib-nosed however so they are given as a penance the other, sister, while the dainly one goes to her lover an indigenous product of the island
who happens to have "done away
with the rib-nosed creature."
The revue is full of brimful num- ters and should prove a success with
a Hongkong audience.
SHANGHAI RICE.
SUPPLIES FROM HONGKONG.
SMASHING THE PROFITEERS.
The Shangbai Gazette seems to be greatly elated at the relief afforded the Northern Settlement by the rice supplies from Hongkong. Writing on July 19 under the heading of "510 Catties Hongkong Rice Arrive Per s.s. "Kwongsang," to Smash Local Rice ProSteer," our northern contemporary said:
Another shipment of 510,000 cat. ties of Hongkong Saigon Rice has arrived per Indo-China s.s. "Krong sang" to relieve the local rice distress and smash the ring of con- scienceless rice profiteers who have been waxing far in silver dollars while hunger gnawed at the very vitals of the people.
The present shipment of rice from Hopgkonz was purchased at $7 a. picul of 100 catties and, including freight charges, the landed price in Shanghai works out to $11, or $11. 50 a picul of 140 catties, but this Hongkong rice. will be sold at nine dollars ($9) a picul of 140 carties to the general public of Shanghai.
It is estimated that a loss of Taels 300,000 in the aggregate will have to be met for the cheap rice scheme, but a group of Chinese philanthropists are prepared to face the defcit and continue the fight against the local rice profiteers until they are beaten to the ground and the local rice distress among the people of Shanghai com pletely relieved.
STRIKES STILL FREQUENT.

During the past week some 100,000 piculs of rice have been in ported into Shanghai as well as some 10,000 piculs of wheat and beans
Of the former not less than one quarter bas been purchased by the Nanyang Brothers Tobacco Company for cheap sale. With these arrivals the price has gone down to $10 a" pict),.or even less..

The iron workers threaten to strike unless their demands for a raise in salary are granted. And the workers in the Pootung Dock demand seven cents a day instead of the five which has been offered them. It is under- stood that the Company is willing to comply with the demands of the men; half the money will be used to buy them food and the other half will be given theat.
A rice boat came to Shanghai on July 23 and reported that it had been robbed of all its stork, amount- ing in all to 150 picols, near Pootung. In view of this, the City Magistrate has given orders to the varica gunboats strictly to enforce his recent order which affords protection to the ships.

WHY?
WHAT THE POLICE ARE ASKED TO BELIEVE.
A Chinese widow living at No. 89 Queen's Road East, reports to the Police that at about 7.55 p.m., yes. terday, four men broke into her fat. Two of the intruders caught her by the throat, while a third stifled her cries with a heavy fur coat. They then bound her hands and feet and left her on the bed while they ransacked the house. They stole property to the value of $30 and then decamped. The Police are doubtful as to the truth of this report, as they found a large quantity of jewellery on the woman's bed intouched. It seems unlikley, they think, that had robbers in fact visited the house, they should be satisfied with $30 in money and leave the jewellery untouched.
