TURF MYSTERY.

AN OWNER IN COURT.

ALLEGED SUBSTITUTION OF HORSES.

Starting charges of racing fraud- by the substitution of one horse for another in order to win a race. were heard at Bow-street in mail week,

'In some respects the allegations, which were made at the instance of the Jockey Club, recail the sensational case of Running Rein, a borse which won the Derby of 1844, and was then said to have been really a four-year-{| old, and therefore ineligible.

Peter Christian Barrie, an owner of racehorses and a gentleman_rider, was arrested at Charing-cross Station on a warrant charging him with obtaining a cheque for £167. 19s 6d. | from Messrs. Weatherby and Sons, agents of the Jockey Clab, by false pretences.

When before Mr. Graham Camp- bell, Barrie gave his age as 32, and described himself as a horse-dealer, of Queen's Hotel, Leicester-square.

Mr. C, F. Gill, for the Jockey Club, told the Court that on October 25, 1919, a race called the Faceby Plate. for two-year olds, was ran at the Stockton race meeting. Barrie, who owned and trained horses in his own name, was said to have used the name of A. Pearson, of the Victory Hotel, Leicester-square, for the pur poses of entering a horse called Coat There of Mail for the Faceby Plate. yas a horse of that name, but it had never run before, or since, and the case, of the Jockey Club was that it did not run on that day. Instead.

Barrie claimed,

caused three-year-old horse, called to - Stockton Jazz, to be sent. and, ridden by W. H. Griggs, led a field of eight throughout and woo -easily by three lengths. The animal ran as Coat of Mail, and was backed at odds of 5 to 2 against for very large sums of money.

Comments in the sporting Press led Messrs. Weatherby to ask for in- formation about the horse, and a reply came from "A. Pearson." on Victory Hotel notepaper, stating that Coat of Mall would have been seat to Epsom for training, but had got cast in the box and injured.

A cheque for the amount of the stakes was posted to "Pearson," and Barrie cashed it by buying a fur coat and a rug at a Regent-street tailor's å balance of £138, 9s. 6d being paid him.

- Further correspondence passed about the horse, and Messrs. Weather- by were then told that Coat of Mail bad been "not exacty in training but out at exercise with hunting horses, under the charge of my groom."

A detective inspector described the arrest at Charing-cross, and said Barrie inquired if the warrant against him was by a Captain, Norrie, to, whom he had sold a horse. for £300, but had not, delivered the animal:

When told the charge was that of entering a three-year-old called Jazz in a "two-year-old race as, Coat of Mail, Barrie said, "I know nothing whatever about it. I am a man of the world, and this looks like a long job, and if you can do anything to help me I shall be grateful

Passports for himself and his wife and some French and English money "were found on him "when he was searched, and he made a statement.-17 A remand was ordered until Jude 15. no application being made for

Coat of Mail is a three year old by Roquelaure--Queen of the Dell. Ac cording to Turf records he has run only once in the Faceby Plate at Stockton last October. Jazz is DOW a four-year-old, who last, season ran In six races without success. He won a small hurdle event under M H. rules this year Mr. Barrie bas been more prominently connected with racing under the National Host "Bode, and lat season won a Cremat Manchester
