MUSICAL SURPRISE.

www.

A man who took his wife and three children for a walk in the Bois de Vincennes, near Paris, noticed a cafe, says the Continental Daily Mail, out- side which was the following notice. -"Reopening under new manage ment; all sorts of surprise packets."

On the way back the family stopp- ed at this cafe and had five glasses of beer. The waiter persuaded them to wait until the band began to play, and each absorbed another glass of beer. Directly the band struck up the waiter presented his bill. 155. To the family head's protests, he re plied by pointing to a notice which stated the price of a glass of beer to be Is, without and is. 9d with music. The bill was paid, but complaint was laid with the police.

A "SLUMP" IN 'ALLIGATORS.

Old travellers told wonderful tales of the multitude of alligators on the Mississippi raudbanks. Now a tele gram from New Orleans says that the raw material of fashionable suit- cases and dressing-bags may disap- pear unless a close season for the reptile is imposed. Existence becomes precarious for any wild creature | whose destruction yields à profit to man. The furred animals of the Arctic are bunted remorselessly. Even the British mole may need pro- tection. Before the war a moleskin fetched not more than a penny. Last winter the price touched two shi-

CURIOUS CUSTOMS IN

· BRITTANY.

Old customs die hard in Brittany, a statement just exemplified by the marriage of the chief farmer of the Breton village of Plouchour to a maid of the same, district. Two thousand guests attended the wedding, and the meal had seven courses the bill running to £1,000. All friends and relations were guests by right, and, as relations include cousins twenty times removed, the conse quenes was that everybody seemed to be the parent of everybody else. Beggara and half-witted people crowd there at the announcement of the festivities and are always welcome; being under. God's own protection they bring good luck to the young people. Tables are laid in a field or meadow for the feast, which often lasts as long as five or six hours; whole oxen, sheep, and pigs are roasted in trenches dug for that pur pose; poultry and game are scarcely worth mentioning, although a bun- dred of them are included in the menu; at one end-of the field are casks of cider and wine Later on the fiddlers and binious (bag-pipers) will sit on these casks and make the party dance their curious ́dance—

Each jabadsón, rigodon, derobee. guest brings his or her knife and fork, for that is the etiquette. It is etiquette, too, for the best man to make a collection and pour the pro ceeds into the lap of the bride, while another curious custom is seen when in the middle of the meal the bride- groom's father or a priest rises and prays aloud for the souls of the de parted. Usually five or six couples

lings, and gamekeepers trebled their MILK CHOCOLATE BARS (with Toasted Almonds) are married on the same day, and

wages by their traps.
