HORDES OF TOURISTS,
ACCOMMODATION PROBLEM SOLVED.
A hundred and sixty thousand visitors from the United States and from our own dominions are expect: ed in London this summer. The
problem of their accommodation, at one time a little uncertain, has been happily and completely solved by the Overseas Visitors' Bureau of the Red Triangle Hospitality League, which, with Sir Harry Brittain as chairman of the Advisory Committee, has been the formed in, association with numerous societies whose object is either to promote Anglo-American re lations or to bind together the various parts of the Empire..
We have created here," said bir George R. Chapman, the business manager, in an interview with are presentative of the Observer at the Beaver Hut, the headquarters of the bureau, the machinery which will enable us to secure accommodation for any number of overseas visitors who come to this country this year. "Then we have over 100 furnished houses, many with service, on our books, and we are in close touch with the principal West Endestate agencies, so that if there should be any great demand for furnished houses we can have their recommended lists in the office in an hour.
FRANCE AND THE BATTLEFIELDS. "Some of the visitors are coming for a few weeks ouly; others for a few months. modation on the steamers. The rush, therefore, is likely to continue for the next two or three years. All our advices from America go to prove that.
Here at Bearer Hut," Mr. Chap man added, "we have a well-furnish- ed lounge, reading and writing room for visitors, and a burean equipped with information on every subject. We have guides and social couriers, we can get secretaries and cars if required; and we can advise in such matters as the selection of schools for children and motor tours through the country. THE NEW HUNDRED.
The London detective force, which is to receive an additional 100 men, will have as efficiency further in- proved by the provision of four flying squadrons of detectives.
These squadrons are now being formed, and will be used whenever and wherever urgent need for extra assistante grises in the Metropolitan Police area. All these men will have their base at New Scotland Yard. Each squadron will consist of an in-. spector and about half-a-dozen ser- geants and constables.
If a serious crime is committed. say, in the south of London, and the local detectives require immediate aid in tracking down the criminals, one or more of the Eying Squadrons will be sent in motor-cars from New Scotland Yard. and will report themselves for Jury to the divisional detective-inspec-
tor in charge of the inquiry.
I will be some time before the new 100 mgr. who are to be distributed among the 20 divisions, will be suff. ciently trained as detectives to make their weight appreciably felt, The fying squadrons will consist only of experienced detectives, and there is no doubt that the rapid concentration of a large force of men will make it less easy for criminals to escaper .. For some time there has been a serious shortage of detectives in all -divisions-This-has-been-due-parily to the retirement of men of many years service and the inability of the authorities, owing to the exigencies of the war, to their places with young men. Another important factor, which has made an increase in the detective). force imperative is the big growth in the population of London.
