SPIES SHOT IN PARIS
1.
NUNS LEAD GIRL TO THE DEATH POST.
Three men and a woman suffered death at the hands of the military authorities in France on May 15. They were Toque. Moses Lemoine, Herbert and.Alice Aubert, all of whom have been setive agents for the Ger- mans in the occupied regions of the North Al notorines organ of German propaganda, the Gazette des Ardennes. was produced under the auspices oi Toque, a man of considerable intelli- gence and journalistic, ability, who at one period was in the French Colonial service. Owing to this organisation many Frenchmen were betrayed into the hands of ne Germans and shot, '
A COOL VILLAIN."
Toque and Lemoine received the announcement of their impending dnom quite calmly. When awakened frem a sound sleep and told they had to die they seemed to receive the news #Better death than with stoic calm.
a continuance of this prison life.' remarked Toque.
Acbert, who had bees a soldier, was confined in a military prison. When told his last hour had come. he babbled incoher ently and was understood to say that was pleased that the end was near. Imprisonment had held upon his mind. He laughed in a wild and delirious way, and the doctors were puzzled as to whether he was insane or feigning Gadness.
There was a terribly poignant scene of despair in the cell of the woman spy, Alice Aubert, when she learned She that her last hour had come. broke down completely, and finging herself on the floor as the feet of the Find- officials she pleaded for mercy. ing her jailers could not be moved, she asked for permission to see the prison chaplain and to receive reli- gious consolation This was granted, Two nuns from the prison accompanied the doomed woman to the firing post ar Vincennes. She was the last of the Four to arrive.
JESTING IN FACE OF DEATH. Toque was the most self-possessed of the four. Before leaving prison he had written to the Minister of Justice At the declaring his innocence. execution ground."while awaiting the arrival of the woman. he descended from the automobile. walked about, smoked a cigarere; and, by way of being humorous, complained about ali the reputed inpunctuality of women, one of whom, he said. was keeping three men waiting to die. With Alice Aubert arrived ar ist. her bobbed hair flying in the freeze. and holding a crucifix before her, she was led to the-execution post escorted by the two nuns who had come with her from the prisch.
Toque at the last moment cried out that he was innocent. This probably unnerved the soldiers, and upset their sim, for the volley failed to kill him outright. A sergeant rushed up and sought to finish the wretched man by shooting him in the head with his revolver, but, to the horror of the spectators, Toque still lived and his groans were heart-rending. A second sergeant rushed up, and, putting the muzzle of his revolver close to Toque's ear, blew out his brains and put an end to his life and sufferings. doctor examined the bodies and certi- fied all four were dead. Toque's com panions had all died instantaneously.
