Vilhjalmur Stefansson, the Arctic explorer, was recently on a fortnight's surprise visit to friends in London. This is his first journey to London since his last expedition to the North, and he gave to correspondent of The Observer an interview autkaing his latest travels.

Discussing the future prospects of his territory, which has been added to Canada, Mr. Stefansson said :--

"I am of opinion that it will be, in course of time, of immense value to Canada. In the process of settle ment Canada will steadily spread northward, and some of these islands .will be utilized. That certainly should come about within the next 25 to 50 years. I think the resources of these islands can be used to help overcome the meat short- zge with which the world is threatened. In these northeza letî- tudes, of which I have been speak- rich crop of grass ing, there is which grows and dies yearly, and thus is wasted. The problem for us is to discover an animal which is cap- able of converting that grass into meat for human consumption.

"During my long stay in the Arctic I came across several old, friends among the Esquimaux, but discovered animals no new tribes of previously unknown to me. Various minerals were noticed on the islands. On most of them coal was to be seen on the face of the cliffs, and in some copper was observed, also gold. Discoveries in this direction, however, were not pursued to any great extent as our expedition was more scientific than commercial".
