REPUBLIC OF SCHOOLBOYS.

MAKING" LAW AND ORDER.

THY CANE OUTDONE.

The full story of the""Republic” in the Northern Polytechnic Day Secondary School, Holloway, is told by Mr. Ernest A. Craddock, the senior French 'master, in "The Class- room Republic,” published by Messrs. A. and Black, Ltd. He declares that the system which makes the teacher alone the arbiter of good conduct and the sole judge of tight and wrong is fundamentally evil, and that in the school, autocracy must give place to democracy. The teacher, he says, should delegate his discipli nary powers to the boys 'themselves. He decided to make this experiment in his own class two years ago, and told the boys that he should restrict his activities to netual teaching. The discipline of the class both inside and outside the class room, should be in the hands of a com mittee elected by the boys themselves! This committee should be empowered to punish and to reward, and would be held responsible, pot to him, bot to the class itself, that the home- work was well and punctually performed, sports, were properly.. conducted, the "room

was kept in order, the boys" appearance was not neglected, etc. Under certain circumstances the committee would actually decide what homework should be done in class also.. A 'committee was appointed and soon a crisis arose: Two boys who had falled to get 40 per cent, of the pos sible marks, and therefore were set a task by the committee, refused to acknowledge the new authority. The task was thereupon doubled by: the committee, and as the offenders still held cut, a notice was affixed to the class notice board calling a meeting of the class. The notice proceeded --

Two boys are inclined to treat this enterprise as a huge joke and have. refused to do imposts that have been justly banded out to them by meme- bers of the committee they helped to vote for. A jury of twelve boys will. be chosen from the class to consider " the claim of these conscientious ob jectors, We don't want to give punishments; but when they are given, be a sportsman and take them like-a-man and do not-quibble over them because you think that some- body else hasn't got any. A swear box has been suggested. That will

He saw it inevitable, and the task was duly performed that very day. “I have now taught for two years,” said Mr. Craddock, "and I should no more think of going back to the old way than I should think of trying to re-establish trial by ordeal: Failures in homework have almost disappear- ed and when by chance a boy does fail to secure 60 per cent of the pos sible marks he usually, as a matter of course, looks to the nearest meni- ber of the committee and nods, which signifies that the work will be done again twice by the next morning,

CANTON,

I have punished no boy in any way for close on two years, and with

punish seems to have disappeared the necessity to do so. Punishments by the committee have become so rare that when they are necessary the necessity excites remark. If I am dissatisfied with any of the work done I complain to the class, and the committee takes the matter up. 'If, – for example, I find in marking a set of exercises that some are defective. from the point of view of neatness, insufficient preparation, carelessness; etc. I pass the copies to the com- mittee.

"The next day the offenders bring me entirely new work, which has been set by the committee, and which is now submitted for my approval.” Mr. Craddock points out that under the old system not only is serious injustice frequently done, but much - Wrong-doing goes unpunished. Boys, he says, will not tell masters the full facts for fear of being regarded as sneaks, "but when they governi them-. selves and punish themselves all täit of sneaking disappears and the body public cleanses itself in a manner that is distinctly efficacious.
