DRUGS IN LONDON.

TRACKING THE DOPE FIEND.

Where is all the cocaine, morphine, opium, and other drugs which are known to be still sold in, fairly large quantities in the West End of London: coming from, and who are the traffic. kers? asks a writer in The Globe.

The authorities are determined to find out, for the recent cases which have come to light where drugs have been sold or "given" to friends hare demonstrated that in spite of deaths, madness, and other terrible calamities which follow the dope, fiend, the "stuff" is still available.

Scotland Yard authorities intend to have a regular rout of suspected per taons, as it is believed that some che mists in obscure corners are making small fortunes by selling tiny quanti- ties for fabulous sums.

The most common of the drugs is cocaine, and it is known that there are certain shops where the victim can still have a supply of the powder on certain terms-chat is, if he or she is introduced by a friend and vouched for by a customer who is known to the proprietor of the shop. As a matter of fact it is believed that the circle of drug takers in the West End is becoming alarmingly large.

At first the drug is taken for a 20 attack of headache, or for

'nerves," or to induce sleep, or to resist sleep; and before the victim knows he or she has acquired a taste. for the dope. After that it becomes in some cases a matter of getting the drug by any means and at any price. Not long ago a young American entered a shop in London where be was told becould have a "speedball." The "speedball" he wanted was not the kind he got, for he meant merely a certain liquid which gives a kick to the vital force. Instead of that be received a powerful drug, and after he had slept the round of the clock he woke to find that bis mind was at blank, as also was the place where he usually kept his "wadi"
