MANCHESTER WEEKLY MARKET REPORT.

Messrs. James F. Hutton and un Ltd Manchester, report on March

31

The week's trading in cotton has been dull and featureless and a natural reaction bas taken place from the high rates recently ruling. An entire absence of bull support aad cessation of covering marked the opening at New York and a sharp break in values resulted; Later, the

same influences con- ilnued evident but the decline was checked apparently by the strength of sterling exchange which has im proved further and seems finally to have been the main factorin a firmer tone at, the close. The Liverpool "market has also been quiet, and" in | fact" almost fat, prices following the decline initiated at New York. Egyptian futures remain idle and a considerably weaker tone is in

· evidence, values falling steadily.

In the yarn and cloth sections there is no change to report from recent weeks, conditions remaining very much unaltered. The turnover has been of very limited dimensions but this quietness has as yet had practi cally no effect on yarn or cloth prices, which remain very steady. At the sanie time whilst mot lower, quotations certainly shew an easter tendency. At the present time both spinners and manufacturers are disturbed by the revision of the scale of wages, the agreement in force terminating at the end of April, and this has now come up for dis cussion. The operatives have form- ulated their demand which is for 60 per cent increase on the present rates and is considerably higher than has been anticipated. What the settlement will be remains to be seen but the effect of the demand has been to strengthen the demands of producers and in some cases has led to an added reluctance to do further business until an agreement is reached. Whilst it is possible that this has been responsible to soras. slight extent in restricting business, the fact remains that enquiry is on a very small scale indeed. BERITAGE OF INDIA.

I

Under the auspices of the Indian Society of Oriental Art a meeting was held in Calcutta on February 25, Lord Ronaldshay presiding, when Rev. Dr. J. N. Farquhar delivered an interesting lecture on the heritage of India. He said that in the early annals there were a great many dis- tinct civilizations in the world. Of these only two, namely, European and Asiatic civilizations stood out in

It was in Calcutta, in Bengal, at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century that the two civilizations, European and Indian, were brought into effective

was supreme and what was to be the outcome of the clash of the two civilizations. The im mediate result was: the almost complete dominance of the civilization of Europe in Bengal and practically all Asia. What did the heritage of | India, consist of? First her religion, thep her science, next her industry, The next question was what remained to be done. First, study and research were wanted. A great deal had al ready been accomplished but an im- mense quantity of material still await- ed the labours of the eager toiler, The next thing necessary was the" publication of cheap and simple vernacular "literature to enlighten the masses on the result of the re- search. In conclusion he suggested what was wanted was not the divorce of the two civilizations, Indian and European, but the interpenetration of each by each...

The Governor, in proposing the vote of thanks to the lecturer, said that two classes of workers-were required. In the first place they required expert scholars who were capable of carrying out the work of research. The second class of workers needed were those who were capable of making use of the abstruse
