The desirability of highspeed geared turbines for express ship-pro- pulsion is well established by the fact
that during the war high-speed tumbines with mechanical gearing were universally adopted by the British Admiralty for patrol boats, torpedo boat destroyers, light cruisers, battleships and battle cruisers
of the highest power. During the last four years practically no direct driving turbines have been fitted in warships.
At the time of signing the armis- tice the total horsepower of geared turbines completed and under con- struction for war-vessels for the Allies was over 16,000,000.
In spite of the congestion which" this caused in the turbine-makers? works, the Minister of Shipping in England and America ordered as many geared turbines as possible for the standard transport and freight vessels built during the war.
An efficiency of 98.1/2 per cent is obtained in the case of single reduce tion gearing, and there is practically no limit to the ratio of reduction that can be employed between: turbine and propeller thus both turbine and propeller run at their most economical speeds.
Experience has shown that the lite of the gears is very long. The gears. of s.s."Mahamada," after five years' continuous service, during which the Tessel completed over 233,000 miles of steaming, were in excellent con. dition.
The reason for this phenomenal. development in geated-turbine ships Is that a saving in coat of from 17 per cent. to 26 per cent has been effected as compared with vessels fitted with reciprocating engines, and the space occupied and the weight of the turbine plant are ap- proximately one-half of that el re- ciprocating engines. Moreover, the wear and tear and maintenance costs are exceedingly small. The geared turbine ship have the same advant- ages Over direct turbine-driven vessels, but to a lesser degree.
Although it may be affirmed that, vessels having high speeds are very expensive to rus, an investigation will shew that owing to the econo-- mies effected by these new develop. ments there is actually a relatively
competitive vessels fitted with older - and slower means of populsion.
