On one of the naval vessels it has been found recently that leaving the clinker on the bars after changing from coal to oil quickly, and burning oil only, was sufficient to protect the bars..

A regards relative performances of cylindrical' and water-tube boilers. for mercantile marine purposes the Ba. "Avenger," a veasel of 16,250 tons displacement and a speed of 19 knots, were fitted with water-tube boilers and superheaters having geared turbines of 14,300 H.P... in which the consumption of oil fuel per H.P. per hour was only £74 lbs.

This vessel was originally built as a mail and passenger steamer for the San Francisco and New Zealand. service, but immediately after her trials, was taken over by the British Admiralty and convected into an armoured auxiliary cruiser. The ressed was used for patrol work at many varying, speeds, during which the boilers responded fully and most efficiently, with an economy in con sumption of oil, as foreshadowed in the trial results—B. & W.
