The Prince of Wales had a memorable experience on crossing the line, the celebration being on an unprecedented scale as a result of much re- search into ancient customs and the employment of the rhyming talent of the crew. The ceremonies were so striking that a book of words will be published. King Neptune, attended by a court of fifty, held an investiture- bestowing on the Prince of Wales the Order of the Equatorial Bath, tying a miniature tub round his neck. Similarly grotesque decorations were con- ferred on the Admiral and officers, each being accompanied by appropriate verses. The Prince recited a verse of his own composition, welcoming their Majesties of the deep. He participated in the procession and afterwards was the first to be initiated. He was lathered pink, black and white and ducked three times three. The Prince landed at (Fiji to-day having a picturesque reception, the fuzzy beaded, khaki clad guard of honour inclu. ding war veterans. Replying to addresses the Prince said King George. regarded the welfare of the indigenous races of the empire as a sacred charge.
