A SHIPPING CARDALTY.

LONDON, April 16.

The "Lorenzo Marques," a Portuguese steamer, encountered twenty miles east of Inhambane, the British barque "Speedonia" from Singapore for Table Bay. There had been an explosion aboard. She took her in tow, but was obliged to abandon her owing to the weathertug is being sent to assist the "Speedonia."

EXCUSES FOR ACTION.

PARIS, April 17.

A message from Oppeln says the population of Upper Silesia has begun a campaign to secure the mobilisation of the pan-German forces there, as a sequel to a quarrel in a cafe in which a French soldier shot a German workman. Hostile demonstrations against the Allies occurred at Oppeln upon the visit of the Inter-Allied Commission. Several French soldiers have been assaulted and injured. Engineered disorders are feared.

FAMOUS GEOGRAPHER DEAD.

LONDON, April 17.

The death is announced of John George Bartholomew, geographer and cartographer, and head of the Edinburgh Geographical Institute. He was one of the founders of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society and had been its Hon. Secretary since its foundation in 1844. He introduced the layer-system of contour colouring for topographical maps.

THE RAILROAD STRIXH.

NEW YORK, April 16.

Mr. peace. The railway strikers have made the first overtures for McHugh,chairman of the Strikers' Committee, stated that the strikers wished to avail themselves of the opportunity provided by the Fallroad Labour Board, to consider grievances, but would not resume without a substantial wage increase. Attorney-General Pulmer has published evidence of indica- tions that the Radicals were connected with last year's steel strike and are directing the railway strike, with the object of disrupting the Railway Brotherhoods and organising with one big union.

THE MEXICAN TROUBLE.

NEW YORK, April 6. A message from Nogales says. General Flores, commander of the independent forces, has captured Sanclas and is proceeding with 2,500 men to Culiacan.. It is reported that his troops are deserting.

BRITAIN'S MERCHANTMEN.

LONDON, April 16. The Lloyd's Register of Shipbuild- ing returns for the March quarter show 3,394,000 tons merchantmen building in the United Kingdom on March 31 (being an istrefise of 400,000 tons as compared with December, 1919, and 140,000 tons as compared with 12 months ago.

Of this toanage 705.000 tons was

commenced during the quarter, includ- ing 62 vessels of 10.000 tons and upwards. The outpur in the quarter had sightly decreased as compared with the previous quarter.

The merchant tonnage building abroad is 4,547.000. a decrease of 320,000 as compared with December 31 last, owing, to a decrease of 393.000 in the tonnage building in the United Smies.

The world's total of 7,941,000 | shows an increase of 81,000 tons as compared with December last.

The tonnage puilding in the United Kingdom shows increase

by 1,500,000 tors. and abroad by 4.100,000 as compared with 1814..

THE SITUATION IN GERMANY.

BERLIN April 16.

In the National Assembly, the Finance Minister, Herr Wirth, stated that Germany's consolidated debt on March 31 amounted to 92 milliard marks and the floating debt to 105 miliard marks. The latter, will be further greatly increased.

The Vossische Zeitung states that the property of the leaders of the Kapp revolt has been confiscated.

THE HAGUE, April 16. A Bill has been introduced into the States Generel providing for petral- ties up to five years' imprisonment on persons corresponding with foreigners. for the purpose of furthering à revolt. in Holland, or importing revolutionary propaganda.
