"T" of Tientaln writes-lo the Peking & Tientsin Times, I notice in a leading article that Mr. EL P. Wilkinson, Crowe Advocate. was rebuked by the judge of H. M. Supreme Court, last week for the use of the word Britisher, as a synonym for
British subject." His Lordship

As an ardent student of the Eng- lish language and as an ex-officer of 'his Majesty's Army, although of alien birth, I must confess that it is the -very first time I have come across -the word "Briton" in practice.
When I volunteered the first ques. tion asked me in China was:
Ate you a Britisher ?"
When I turned up at the War Office I was greeted thus: "As you are not a Britisher, we cannot give you a Commission."""
When subsequently soliciting the help of the Foreign Office one of the heads there said inter alia: "What not a Britisher." a pity that you
When during my short Army career I applied for a tranfer to another branch of the service, I was told: "Yes if you were only Britisher, etc."
When in spite of this, I did get a transfer and again applied for a certain other branch, I was told by my then chief, a brilliant Oxford scholar: "Yes old man, but do try to become naturalized. If you were a. Britisher there would be no difficul- ties at all."**
An official at Buckingham Palace sald to me: How tunny to meet an officer in the British Army, who is not a Britisher."
And during my life in France ! often met officers who said: ""Oh you are not a Britisher." But dur- ing the 16 years I have had the good fortune of knowing British sub- jects. I have never been asked: "Are you a Briton?" In most cases (with due apologies to Mr. H P. Wilkinson) I have been taken for an Irishman.
I would suggest, that the word Britisher is a correct evolution of the wood British as, for instance, pub lisher comes from publish, photogra graper from photograph, etc.
To my mind the only word I have ever heard Americans use as a kind of nickname for Britons is "Lime- Juicer, a word which is simply derived from the fact that Hme-juice used to be served out with the daily rations in. British ships.
If a Briton speaks about frogs, sauerkrauts or macaronis in referring to certain Continental nations we- know, those synonyms do not neces sarily constitute an insult, but are simply derived from the national dishes of those nations.
If the word Britisher cannot be tolerated, thea why not do away with the word British and instead of saying British Consulate, we could say Britannic Consulate. I am certa. in we would get used to that quicker than we got used to other innovations "Government ale," etc.
