Lord Mantagu, in an interesting address, traced the development of aeroplane from its exallest stages to the marvellous, progess that had

been made, and urged its great

importance and value to the British Empire. Men he said, from the carllest ages, had always wanted to fy, but it was not until October 1908, that man was able to dy Europe. It was true that the brothers Wright few to a certain extent just before that time. From 1905 1908 they worked: at the problem, on the Californian [coast, first of all with glideri worked by hands and feet », and eventually they made an engine, and were able to use power for the pur pose of flying. Flight was only made possible by the development of the internal combustion engine, and there had been a reirvellous progress in the science since 1910. At first the monoplane was very, much in favour, but there was not much, in his opinion, to be said for it as against the biplane or the tripline in polgt of safety. The aeroplane of to-day was, curiously enough, not very different from the original aeroplane of the Wrights, and all wished to give due recognition to the splendid work those brothers did. (Hear hear.) He recalled that the first Oversea flight was made by Bleriot in 1916, when he crossed the Channel; and that Captain Laureati, an Italian, dew from Turin to Naples and back, a distance of 1024 miles, non-stop, and established the first record over 1,000 miles. The feat we knew most of wall his journey from Turin to London in June, 1917, when he had an early breakfast in Turin, and bad lunch in London. The journey of 650 miles took seven hours, and for 450 miles

years after the earliest days of avia- ton, there was nothing we could not hope that aviation would do in the future.

Urging its importance to the Br tish Empire, Lord Montagu pointed to the weakness of the Empire strate gically. It was the most scattered Empire that had ever existed. It would be difficult in war to bring about a large concentration sfrate gically, and in Holes of peace, the cost of communication was "high. He suggested that in the coming years distances would count but very Brtle, and time would be an import ant factor: Evan to-day one could fly to Egypt in about the same Ume that his grandfather towk to ro in his coach from Edinburgh to London. The great English-speaking uations were divided by great seas and vast continents; and anything. that could shorter to distances be tween their chief centres of popula tion must be to the good, (Hear, hear) The rapidity and ease of communication were all-important for defence and commerce, Egypt was a most Important place in the world from an aviation point of view, being in a favourable pazition: Reng- raphically and atmospherically, and If only looked at from the standpolar of flying it should never be handed over to any ather country. A dist dinguished stateman had once mic we must thlak Imperially. The time had now arrived when we must think in a world-wide sense, and think of travel in the future, and of com- munications inward and peace In world-wide terms,
