--- MANCHESTER WEEKLY
MARKET REPORT."
Messrs. James F. Hutten. Cô Ltd., Manchester, report on February 11: American cotton prices. have been seriously affected during they past week by as extremely low sterling exchange. This reached a lower level than ever before, and at one time had the effect of putting a definite stap to the importation of cotton here, Liverpool ceased, bay- Ing temporarily and caused an extremely excited market in New York, prices falling rapidly. Although there has been a slight recovery there, rates are lower than a week ago but at Liverpool they have of course risen somewhat through the weakness of the the exchange. It will be seen from these facts what z very far reaching effect, the Ameri can exchange is having on cotton prices and it is very evident that any material improvement in this must have a very prompt.effect in lower ing values. There does not however seem much likelihood of this taking place for some time to come. In they yarn and cloth, markets, a fairly extensive and varied enquiry is still to be sated from almost all outlets The position is however unchanged, produc- ers generally still declining to under take further heavy engagements, and this, together with the difficulty of delivery time, as again had the effect of reducing transactions to more or less minor importance.
·remains very. The general tone healthy and prices are firm and still maving against buyers. China en. quiry has been somewhat more ex- tensive. India business ha been ex- tremely varied but again of consider- able importance. Java and Singapore have also operated but the Near East and Egypt shewa falling off inenquiry. South America and the Home Trade have been more active. The need of an adequate supply of raw cotton is at present exciting a great deal of inter- est in the whole industry. We have relied, and still do so, on the Amer can crop, and it has become 'very apparent that we are now in sight of a serious scarcity unless the acreage under cultivation in the States is very largely increased. This is very ap- paren! indeed when it is remembered that out of a crop of 11,000,000 Bales as last year, the normal' con- sumption by America would be 8,000,000 Bales. If present high prices are maintained for the next month or two, it is almost "certain that the area under cultivation for cotton will be very largely increased in America, but a fall in values at this time, and a consequent limita- tion of cotton cultivation in conse quence would create a serious out- lock in the very near future.

By her motherly advice.. she pictures to the erring ones the temptations and pitfalls before them, and shows them the error of their ways.
