THE BETTER SIDE OF A GREAT

the

Hawley Harvey Crippen. Amèrican doctor who poisoned his wife with hroscin, dismembered her remains, hid her head no one knows where, and buried the trunk under the Roar of the cellar of the house t Hidrop-crescent, Camden Town, has always been reprobated by the British public.

Mr Filson Young now presents a more sympathetic picture of certain aspects of this curious, imperturbable, low-voiced little man. In a brillianir introduction ra The Trial of Hawley. Harvey Crippen "WAIam Hodge, and Company, 10s. 6d.), published recere ly. Mr. Young traces Crippen's war derings through American cities, his marriage to the German Polish woman Kunigunde Mackamorzki, and the life in London Bohemian circles dut ing the early years of this century,

He was undoubtedly at this time still very fond of his wife, very kind- to her. very patient with her extra- vagances and the interminable calls which she made upon his time and. his means.

His attitude to women was peculiar. He was not the type of men that likes to domi nate women; he was of the type that loves to be dominated by thern: and in his love for showering pre- sents upon his wile in public, and in spending quite ridiculous pro- : portion of his income in the adorn- ing of her plump little person, he exhibited the symptoms of the pay- chopathic type to which undoubtedly he belonged.

HOME DISCORDS.

Mrs. Crippen's inordinate vanity, her aspirations to become a great music-hall artist, which only resulted in one or two feeble appearances

- at very minor music-balls helped, in Mr. Young's opinion, 10 the final tragedy. If the poor woman, he writes. had really been the music hall favourite that she loved to imagine Eerself, both she and her husband, would probably be living now; each happy in a different sphere."

Discord was bound to grise. By the time they were settled in Hilldrop- crescent, third persons present. wit- nessed several domestic eruptions of rather a one-sided mature. Mrs. Crip- pen, excitable and irritable, chiding her husband: Cripgen, pale, quiet..

In short, the causes were now all assembled which were to produce such tragic results. There was. the life at home, sordid and quarrel- some. There was the outward ap- pearance of affluence and display, coupled with the Laboriously kept- up appearance of matrimonial feli- city. There were the business in- terests and anxieties, and there was the secret growing passion for Miss Le Neve.

In the most brilliant pages of his introduction, Mr. Young asks what was

not only escape from his wife bi- murder her?

THE IMPELLING MOTIVE.

The official theory that he poisoned his wife simply, that there might be no obstacle to his life with Ethel Le Neve Mr. Young dismisses. He prefers another theory. His argument is, and it seems reasonable, that Crippen's

· own earnings had diminished. He had been connected with ventures that had

failed. He was back at Munyon's on

A small salary which looked like being turned into a mere commission agency.. There was a sum of £600 standing in the joint neme of husband and wife et the Charing Cross Bank. M Young hints that much of it might have been the proceeds of " presents " from various men to Mrs. Crippen. At any rate she always spoke of it as

my money.

*

Certainly it is known that in Jand- ary 1910, the month of her disappear ance, she had more than once told one of her friends that if Crippen did not give up his association with Miss Le Neve she intended to leave him and to take her money with her Mr. Young believes that she made this threat to Crippen. The loss of bis" wile did not matter. But the loss, of the money and the prospect of a hand- to-mouth existence with the woman be loved tipped the scale.

The rest of the story is well remen- bered; how Crippen and Le Neve, disguised as a boy), took passage from Antwerp to Montreal in the Mont ruse," how the captain had read the description of the two fugitives, and, thought he identified in Mr. and Master Robinson the two people who were wanted by the police and for
