SEARCH FOR BRITISH OIL:
` LAST YEAR'S OPERATIONS.
A report has been issued by the Petroleum. Executive reviewing "the- the progress made during the past year with the drilling for oil which is being carried on by Messi's" "S. Pearson and Son Lid, on behalf of the Government in Derbyshire, North Staffordshire, and Scotland. The position at the end of 1918 was that eleven drilling sites had been select- ed seven in Derbyshire Actual drilling had, however, Been” “cônï• menced at only three of the wells. All the sites were selected as a result of careful geological research, in order to test the most favourable structures and preparations were made to carry the wells down to a depth of 4,000ft, if necessary.
At the present time work is in progress at all the sites, and most of the wells have been carried to con- siderable depths, the deepest being Renishaw, which has now reached a depth of 3,645ft, two other wells are over 3,000ft deep, and five others are between 2,000ft and 3,000ft. The total number of feet drilled during the past year amounts to 25,753, or an average of 8.8ft per well per day, based on the number of days the various wells have been in operation During the last six months the work has been retarded by difficulties in obtaining casing and other material owing to delays in railway transport. A large number of "fahing" jobe. (recovery of lost tools, &c.) have been necessary, some of which have been of special dificulty under exact ing conditions, but in these the work is well in hand,
In order to make a thorough test of the Derbyshire district, a chain of seven wells was planned, covering ar distance of approximately twenty miles. The results so far cbtained have been satisfactory. Oil has been struck in the Hardstoft well at a depth of 3,077 feet, and has to flow steadily. Up to the present time 1,900 barrels (of thirty-five imperial gallons) of crude oil have been ob tained from the well and put into storage. Some time ago an attempt was made to inert a pump at this: well, but owing to an accident to the pump-rods very little actual pumping. was done, and the recovery of the b.oken rods and pump has been a long and difficult task, which is not yet completed.
Since oil was first struck on May 27, 1919, indications of oil have also been met with in several of the other

apart in the neighbourhood of Stoke- or-Trent. Seepages of oil have been known to occur in the coal mines in this district. although sa fär none have been met with in the borings. The Midlothian sites are at West Calder, about twenty miles south- west of Edinburgh, and at D'Arcy, eight miles south-east of Edinburgh. The structure at both location is very favourable for the conservation of any oil which may exist. En- couraging results have been obtained at West Calder, where shows of oil were met with at the following depths: At 530 feet were tands which showed a trade of oil at 650 feet a show. of heavy black oil was obtained upon the drilling tools; at 945 feet gas encounted, with 'an intial estimated flow of 50,000 cubic feet per day, and at 1,165 feet was a sand also showing a trace of oil D'Arcy has only just been com menced.
