BUX AT THE V.R.C.
"Iron" Bux who arrived here on the s.a."Fushima Maru" yesterday, did not lose much time in getting ready for his fight with "Sky" Ker- rison. Within a couple of hours of his arrival, at 12:30, he signed articles. for the fight at Mr. Jenkin's office, and after the tifin hour, he spent some time looking up relatives and old friends, and by five o'clock in the afternoon, he was hard at work at the VR.C. getting fit. Bux is very wystematic in his training, and gives one the impression that he is an old hand. Before a sprinkling of boxing enthusiasts, including Messrs. W. Logan, F. C. Jenkin. Eldon Potter, W. Ward and J. C.. Widin, he went into his
work whole-
heartedly. The evening's work started with two three minutes" go with the punching ball, with a minute's respite, followed by three- minutes with the skipping rope, an Important factor in any boxer's training. Then came the question of getting a sparring partner. Bux

spar. he for Kerrison, will suit me nicely. I know what which sailed from Saigon for Hongkong you mean by telling me beforehand on July 28th last and was not heard of that he is Kerrison's trainer, but I since, has been posted at Lloyds na mis- don't mind a bit, I am used to that sing sort of thing you know. Down Manila, we spar together to-day, and are liable to step into the ring to fight each other to-morrow. The fact that Hewlett is Kerrison's trainer does not worry me any, and I am ready to start work as soon as he is." Three rounds. with Hewlett followed. Bux closed with his man Immediately from the tipping of the gloves, and delivered two beauties to the face. Hewlett broke away, and tried to spar, but Bux who is clearly a follower of the American system of In-fighting, did not give his man ä chance to collect himself, but sim- ply hammered him for all he was worth. Hewlett tried to use what advantage of reach he had, to keep Bux from closing in, but there was no stopping him. He gave Hewlett gore heavy wallops in the first ro- und, receiving in return only one beavy blow, on the back of the bead. In the next round, Hewlett began to resort to his speed to keep himself out of danger, and although Bux chased him all round the foot be was not able to inflict as much punishment as in the first round. Hewlett began to use his left freely after a while, and every time Bux came in, he would push his head back with a straight jab. Hewlett 1 bree times in upper cut quick succession, and although on two occasions, the blow landed, they were, thanks to Bux's alertness, not on the mark. The third upper-cut Bux avcided by ducking and closing with his man. Bax jabbed Hewlett three times in the wind in quick succession, but in getting away received a right swing full to the face Bux fidered Hewlett with a heavy body blow just before the close of the second round. The third round was a whirlwind affair, with freely. being excharged blows Neither did very much damage in this round, at the end of which the applauded enthusia- spectators stically. A minute's respite followed
went then Bux and
three rounda with Seaman Webb, the Featherweight who some smart time ago punished "Teddy "Neal so severely in a tet-round bout at the "Ring." Bux was at first inclined to forget that Webb was only a fea- therweight and went for him ham- mer and tongs, scoring freely with heavy lefts and rights. Webb braved the hurricane very sportingly, and despite the fact that he was used rather roughly, he stuck to his man and put in several good blows now and then. In the second round, although Bux forced the pace, he did not employ his previous offensive methods, and Webb began to hit him more freely, but with little or no effect. Bux jolted Webb under the jaw playfully, and then run away, with Webb after him, landing some good punches to. head and body, which Bux received unconcernedly. In the third round. Bux invited his man to fight faster, himself setting up a great speed, but the two previous rounds had already proved to be too quick for Webb, who was by this time spent, and could not reply. Bux reduced his pace, and allowed Webb to attack, and the latter fought pluckily, punching Bux with all his might. Webb was well applauded after the third round. Bux showed signs of his appreciation of Webb's services by patting him ou the head.
It must be a matter of difficulty for a member of the tribe of Kayans of Borneo to keep track of his name. Among those prople, when a child is born, it receives the name of some repulsive object or ii simply called "it," so that, not having a distinctive name, the evil spirits cannot identify it and cause it harm!
When the child is 2 or 3 or 4 years old they name it, say, Tijan. The father is thereafter known as Tama Tijan-Tama meaning "the father of "aud the mother is known as Inai Tijan-mother of Tijam. The father's original name, Kebing, for example, is dropped, and frequently it is forgotten unless there are other fathers of Tijans. In that case the father is known as Tama Tijan Kebing, father of Tijan, formerly Kebing.
If Tijan dies, then Tama Tijan'a pame becomes Oyong Kebing (mean- ing "Kebing the Bereft," provided Tijan was the oldest. chud.) If a younger child dies, the father be comes Akam Kebing; if his wife dies, he becomes Aban Kebing. If be becomes a grandfather, his name will be Laki Kebing. Laki is dis. tinctly an honorary title, like its. equivalent, datu, among the Malays. With these people datu is superior
the title hadji, borne by one who has made the pilgrimage to Mecca. Datu, literally grandfather, is equiva lent to elder with us.
Among the Kayans it is a breach of marmers to ask a man what his name is. If a white man does so through ignorance the man will turn to a bystander and ask that the stranger, who does not know the customs, may be informed. If a man tells his own name the evil spirits will hear him and can more readily do him harm--New York Sun.
