BRITISH PROGRESS'IN GEARED TURBINES.

One of the outstanding features of British shipbuilding during the past few years has been the rapid deve- lopment of geared turbines. The steam turbine is essentially a high speed machine, while the screw pro.. peller by way of contrast, works efficiently only at low speeds. Con- sequently it has been found advisable to bridge the gulf between the tur bine at 2000 revolutions per minute and the propeller at 90 by some form of speed-reducing mechanism. engineering A good deal of
