A company of soldiers, lined up at the starting point to keep p clear course and they also formed, usbrdon round the table on which the cups were displayed at the distribu- tion of the prizes.
THE RACE.
The course "for the race took die runners up Garden Road, bý Govern ment House and the University and along the Puklulum Road to the june- tion of Jubilee Road. Here they turned and followed Jubilee Roud on the homeward run turning, from Câi- chick Street into the Fraya, then along to the winning post, opposite the Hongkong Club, There was, the usual crush at the start but the steer pull up Garden Road soon strung our the field, many negotiating the hill ar
walk. Opposite St. Paul's Hustel) one competitor, N. B. Mohamed, fell! Out. It was a procession that led up to the University. In most cases the competitors were in hunches with two or three isolated runners Keeping touch with these ahead. It was notice- able that eight Indians, the majority. of whom were well placed at the
finish, were running in company and they kept together practically through- | out the course. Going up the long) slope by the University. Britten was in the lead closely followed by Teja Singh Vayam Singh Ram Singh. Jot Ram. Bailey, Gurbaksh Singh, Hiyet Mohd. and Dalet Singh together ¦ with Realf and Wood. The first bunch were running well and Britten especially seemed to have settled down to an easy stride which cover- ed the ground rapidly. Just under thirty-three minutes had elapsed when Britten swung round inte Jubilee Rond. He looked quite fresh and was running strongly, looking an cust winner. Some seconds passed before the butch of Indians appeared. They were Ratten Singh. Ram Singh. „Teja Singh, Munsha Singh, Josi Ram. Dale: Singh, Nawab, Khan. Hiyar Mahoned. Vayam Singh, and Sadku Singh. A short distance behind cante Realff. Wood, Ru Singh, Arjan Singh and Gurbaksh Singh. The rest of the field

THE FINISH.
Com-
A still larger crowd had gathered to witness the finish and they were kept informed of the progress of the race by bulletins. Sepoy Teja Singh was the first man home completing the dis tance in hour, IL minutes and 4 seconds. A hundred yards behind him came Joti Ram closely followed by Dalel Singh. Tares more Indians then passed the tape and then came Brillen. He had apparently been overhauled by Sincere's alter leading well over the distance. Wood, who finished second in the 1918 Marathor was tenth. Vayam Singh who finish- med twelfth was disqualified, as it ap- pears that he entered the race withour authority in the place of Gunner Thakar Singh. Out of the twenty prizes presented no less than Sheen went to Indian soldiers which is a fine record. The order of the prize swinners was as follows :—

Hongkong, February 13, 1320.
Though this be the dead of the year, The shortest day.
And the sun scarce flaunt his ray Ere darkness closes;
·
We know there is naught to fear, For that spring with, again.be born, And the sap that sleeps in the thorn. Awake in roses.
"Not'a flower of them all shall be
missed;
The aconite first will come, and the snowdrop follow.
And hyacinth keep her tryst In the woodland hollow," When river, and stream are kissed By the skimming swallow.
But what of the sap that teems In the stem of the race? O pray. That the pulse of love at its rost, So warm and tender,
May quicken from, shoot to, shoot. As the life-blood streams. And blossom and break from
creams
Imo deeds of splendour!"

Race. It had shown that the men of Hongkong possessed, lots of grit and it also proved that the Association Was doing good work not only in placing boxing on a firm and proper basis but in fostering athletics by establishing the excellent race they had witnessed that day. Lady Rees-Davies desired to congratulate the winner and those. who had made it hard for him to ob- tain first place. Ir had been a line race and she asked him to express the hope that those who were not success- ful would put in a good fight for the first prize next year? (Applause.)
