And indeed, it is essential that those whose ideas have grown rigid in the conventions of a past, age should experience many shocks if re- ligion to fulfil its mission to the nation in these tremendous days. respectable thing to come to church. This conventional religion of cur fathers was, Indeed, a dreary affair. It might induce. self-complacency, but never en- thusiasm or delight.

In the hurricane of war these old make-believes have been swept away and religion must now stand on its awn merits if it is to stand at all. Before all else it must be real; it must stand in closest connection with the facts of life; it must entwine itself around all that is deepest and most sacred in the thoughts and aspirations of men; it must enlist their energy and action.

The problem, then, of the leaders of religion in the present day is how to proclaim the old message of the Gospel in such a way as to show its intimate connection with the deepest needs of the living men and women, of our time.

Many of our old methods will have to be scrapped; the Prayer Book must be largely rewritten; our use of the Psalms and the Old Testament in the public services must be drastically || revised. The church itself must be made much more a true home for the people than it is in so many cases.

I is with a view to this that the Christmas play at St. Mary's Rother hithe, has been produced, not in the parish hall but in the parish church. This is not in the least to detract from the sacredness of the building, but to make the idea of sanctity less remote, and unreal,

The religious life of the Middle Ages, with all its faults, did at least aucceed in entwining itself around the hearts of the people. They had their miracle plays, which portrayed the great central facts of the Faith.

Usually these plays were given by travelling companies, who took their caravan from village to village and set up their stage on the village And frequently. I doubt not, green. they gave their sacred representa tions in the parish church. They knew the value of teaching given through the eye.

And with all our change of e since there picturesque days, it still remains that truth presented in cut- ward symbol comes with most telling effect. And sacred drama has lost none of its value.

It is this that produces the ex- traordinary atmosphere of prayer and praise that marks the rendering of the Nativity play On the Road to Bethlehem" in this little Church of St. Mary, Rotherhithe, between the docks and the river, in a busy industrial quarter of South London. -Daily Mail.
