The Commerce Degrees represent only one side, the newest side, of our work at the London School of Economics, Sir William continued. There has bech a growing recogni tion among business men of the desirability of higher training in commercial subjects, and some of the younger universities, as at Bir. mingham, provide it. All our important courses are duplicated, given in the evening as well as during the day, and we expect a great number of evening commercial) students. I hope a good many will give full time, with a view of train- ing for a particular firm. Already the Exchange and Audit Department of the Government are paying the fees of their young men to attend our classes. On the business side. Messrs. Harri son and Crosfield are paying the fees. of eighty-six of their employees who are students; and I have 500 or 600) students, who are sent by the rail-i way companies, largely clerks, taking training in accountancy. I hope to i see this practical interest by em ployers in the education of talented ! young men widely extended, and trust that scholarships may he| fourded by business men to enable others to come. In order to obtain the University Degree in Commerce, a young man mast take the full university course, but without aspir- ing to that he can attend the special classes for commerce and gain all the advantages thereby.

Whatis offered to those working for commercial degrees is a wider view of commerce than can be acquired by following in the routine of any particular business office, and the advantages are mutually shared by employers and employed. Every important interest has made an acknowledgment of the crying need of higher commercial training, if Great Britain is to hold its own in world competition. As already said. the heads of the big horses, appealed to personally, have by their con- tributions enabled the scheme at: the London School of Economics to be started. The spirit of the students is all right. The full sum aimed at is £500,000. The time has now arrived for everyone engaged in business in Londoc to do his part and support the university cou se. With a little organisation in the differen: trades there should be suffi cient funds collected and placed at the disposal of the Secretary, Com- merce Degrees Committee, London University, S.W., to establish perman-E ently this new and mostnecessary edu- cational movement.-Daily Telegraph.
