Not only were women of this class. denied the education that would have given them a career and provided that mental or physical occupation: that so many have craved for, but they were also deprived of the oppor tanity of ever being able to eam a livelihood, no matter what their -circumstances in later life.

Even up to the present, wives and daughters of hard-pressed profes- -sional men have been forced to spend idle, unsatisfactory lives in obedience to the social fetish that it would be infra dig for them to take up money. making occupations.
